UAE ID card to be integrate with labour and health cards

Gulfnews reports...

Work is in progress to integrate the UAE national identity card with Ministry of Labour and Health sector which will enable the holders to use it for Labour card, e-signature service for companies, health card and health insurance card, said a senior official.

Darwish Al Zarouni, Director General of Emirates Identity Authority (Eida) said integration of ID card with Ministry of Interior had already been done which enables UAE citizens to use the card as e-passports while travelling to GCC countries.

He was speaking on the first day of Citizen ID Forum, a two-day international summit on ID Programmes organised by Wise Media under the patronage of the UAE Ministry of Interior and endorsed by Eida, Abu Dhabi Police and European Commission. Al Zarouni said Eida has been entrusted a project worth $55 million (Dh202million) to issue about 5 million ID cards and 285,000 cards have already been issued.

"The card will eventually enable the holders to use it for labour card, driving licence, health facilities, travelling to GCC countries [for citizens only], e-payment, e-purse, e-gate, family book of citizens and transportation."

Delegates from about 35 countries are participating in the summit in Abu Dhabi.

Lt General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior in his message offered his support to the summit and said the UAE population registry and ID programme reflects the country's ambition to build a strong system providing modern and advanced life for the identity card holders.

Sophie B. de la Giroday of Wise Media said secure ID cards will check terrorism and human trafficking. "It can create foundations of trust between governments and citizens so prosperity will follow". She said the advanced ID cards will root out laxity in government offices as finding and giving the data will be easier.

Dr Khalid M. Al Tawil, Director General of National Information Centre of Saudi Arabia presented the Saudi experience of ID card projects with technological advancements in the sector. He warned companies against the monopolisation of advanced technology in the field. "Those who insist on monopolisation will finally end up with loosing their own market share", said Dr Al Tawil.

Qatar issued 10,000 identity cards within two months, said Col Saleh Al Kubaisi, Director of Information System Department at Qatar Ministry of Interior. "Identity cards to expatriates in Qatar will be issued by next year," said Al Kubaisi.

Two SMSs needs for emirates ID Card appointment confirmation

Gulf news reports....

Darwish Ahmad Al Zarouni, Director-General of EIDA (Emirates Identity Authority), told Gulf News that it is unnecessary to book an appointment because it is an extra service offered by the authority. Residents who do not make prior appointments can walk into any registration centre of the EIDA and apply for an ID card. However, if anyone books an appointment, he or she must wait for an SMS that tells them where to go to register.

"The first SMS is sent when a person books an appointment, but it does not necessarily mean that the appointment is confirmed. The person has to wait for a second SMS which tells him or her the exact time and location for them to go and register," he said.

Al Zarouni said that many people had gone to the centres after receiving only one SMS and were surprised to find that they had not got an appointment. He also asked people not to panic because there is enough time to register for the ID card.

Thamer Rashid Al Qasimi, planning director and project management director at EIDA, said the pressure on their website has eased after a number of government and private organisations posted the pre-registration application software on their websites.

He said about 50 websites now host the pre-registration software and the number will increase soon.

Al Qasimi said the EIDA will distribute free CDs of the software at registration centres. "The CD can be copied and redistributed. But it may take some more days to complete bulk production of CDs."

No fines for expats who fail to register for Emirates ID cards

Gulfnews Reports...

Expatriate professionals in the UAE can continue to register for their identity cards even after the deadline of December 31.

The Emirates Identity Authority issued a reprieve on Tuesday saying fines won't be imposed on expatriate professionals who fail to get the ID card before the end of December. "Although we don't extend the deadline for the professionals, we will be ready to continue their registration even after the deadline but at the cost of certain inconveniences," said Darwish Ahmad Al Zarouni, Director General of Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA).

"But for UAE Nationals, no services shall be provided without the ID from January 1, 2009 as per law," he said. The reprieve isn't an extension of the deadline because EIDA will open the registration for another category of expatriates from January 1 as per plan.

Thamer Rashid Al Qasimi, Planning Director and Project Management Director at EIDA, said although no punitive measures like fines or freezing of bank accounts will be imposed on those who do not register, EIDA cannot help if any organisation demands identity cards for official transactions after December 31.
